Summer Music – Vol. 2

Posted by Realist on May 31, 2011

The Summer Music editions will feature ‘old school’ tunes to invigorate, educate, and perhaps instigate thought for those who will be involved in the Summer edition of our great  and mighty Reinvention plan.

This week’s edition was pushed back one day. I’ll be back on schedule next week.

I’ve yet to hear of any news comin’ out of the Original Reinvention Task Forces. Two weeks removed from the end of the Spring 2011 semester and it’s been all bark, no bite. Just callin’ it like I sees it.

I know you work hard for the money (I saw you standin’ on that stage for two hours durin’ graduation!), but show me what we gots! At this point, a dance routine on Jackson (out in front of District headquarters ) would be a start. Take a cue from this video:

Unlike the Reinvention blog, this blog does allow you to leave comments – even if you don’t have a profile!

Memorial Day 2011

Posted by Realist on May 30, 2011

At the time I was creating this post, there was no Memorial Day Presidential Proclamation for 2011, so I borrowed Big O’s words from 2010. Here’s the excerpt:

This Memorial Day, we express our deepest appreciation to the men and women in uniform who gave their last full measure of devotion so we might live in freedom.  We cherish their memory and pray for the peace for which they laid down their lives.  We mourn with the families and friends of those we have lost, and hope they find comfort in knowing their loved ones died with honor.  We ask for God’s grace to protect those fighting in distant lands, and we renew our promise to support our troops, their families, and our veterans.  Their unwavering devotion inspires us all — they are the best of America.

Have a good Memorial Day peeps!
Out of respect for the day, Summer Music on The Louge has been bumped to Tuesday, but it will be back on schedule next week.

Phriday Photo of the Week

Posted by Realist on May 27, 2011

Photo of the week will be a summer phriday feature where I’ll offer an image taken with my phantastical camera phone. The photos will range from phunny to thoughphul with a sprinkle of phoolishness. You are welcomed and encouraged to provide a caption to compliment said photo in order to keep that mind thinkin’ critically while your away from the college.

Here’s the first image. I took it while cruisin’ the streets of our great city. No, it’s not mine. I’d a never thrown out such a good piece of phurniture!

Oprah has left the building…

Posted by Realist on May 26, 2011

So I walked past a boob tube showin’ highlights of the last Oprah Show. I have mixed feelings about her contributions to society. I lean towards thinkin’ that she did more for herself that for those who got sucked in. That’s just what I think. You’re more than welcome to try and convince me otherwise. I can’t say I’ll miss her since I never watched a single show in it’s entirety. The reason to do so was always underwhelming.

If the Bulls don’t make it to the Finals I’ll always remember her great circus as the culprit that threw Rose and company out of rythm.

Livin’ in Chicago

Posted by Realist on May 24, 2011

So throughout the summer months, I’ll be droppin’ a few posts from time to time. These posts will primarily deal with questions I got floatin’ in my head (ya know, that thing between the ears). I’m also lettin’ my hair down/out and goin wit a more relaxed tone. Y’all can call it  slang, or as I likes to think, Slanglish! Here goes…

This post goes out to all of y’all, but ‘specially to MathArt ’cause it’s about that Buyer Incentive program email we keep gettin’ reiminded of via our email. It states that first time home buyers can receive assistance. Here’s what I wonder ’bout:

1. Why Rogers Park Community Development Corporation? Who really benefits from this partnership? Did you know they also have a partnership with The Chicago Bored of Ed?

2. Reach Illinois, this is really the group spearheadin’ (or decapitatin’) the movement, heads the program, and according’ to their site, “Employer-assisted Housing (EAH) is a cost effective, easy to administer, hassle free way for employers to help their employees buy or rent homes close to work. When working families are not able to live close to work, their long commutes contribute to traffic congestion, dependence on foreign oil, and air pollution.”
‘Scuse me while I laugh. HA! See, the joke’s on us. I don’t live close to work ’cause I want to, I live IN CHICAGO ‘CAUSE I GOTS TO!.  Shall I repeat it? Nah, didn’t think I needed to.

So here’s a group that purports to be assisting us when in fact they are BENEFITTING from our incarcerated status! Wow…

Summer Music – Vol. 2

Posted by Realist on May 23, 2011

HI KIDS!

If you’re seein’ this post, dat means Dave and/or his crickets are A-O-K for a second edition of Summer Music on The Lounge. This year’s edition will feature a reinvention theme with an ‘old school’ twist. You’ll see what I mean.

Give me a couple of weeks to really get into the swing of the theme. For now, let me get things started with this tune:

Yep, see how it ties into last year’s summer musical palooza kick-off? Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk…

Once I get the reinvention theme goin’, y’all are welcome to make suggestions.

Ta Ta For Now: Summer Hiatus

Posted by PhiloDave on May 21, 2011

You may have noticed from the trickle of posts this week and dearth of regular features that changes are afoot. I had planned for this TTFN post to go up when I finished my grading, but then I decided to wait and see if anything came out on the Reinvention proposals. Alas, though my sources on the Reinvention task  forces said they’d try to get the slides they used to present to the Chancellor released to the rest of us, there has been no word of a “communication strategy” for the proposals (except for one report that their was great annoyance at the top about the lack of one). More news on those when I have any.

So, here we are. The end of the term is upon us, and so the Lounge, like the rest of the building, will be quieter, though still open. You may be hearing from some of the regular contributors (and might even see the return of a regular feature or two under different leadership), you might be hearing from me on occasion, and you might just want to stay away until August. Feel free to post things you find in the comments or send them to me (drichardson2@ccc.edu; philodave@earthlink.net) and I’ll put them up.

It’s been a great year on the Lounge: we’ve had more views in the first five months of 2011 (39, 606) than in all of 2010 (35,802). The daily average has jumped up to around 300 views per day, and we are getting comments from faculty around the district. Good stuff all around. Best of all the discussions have been consistently interesting and thought provoking–a near daily reminder of how lucky I am to work with a bunch of smart and interesting people.

And a big THANK YOU to my fellow contributors, especially the regular feature writers Mathissexy and Matt U (and the Realist for the Midterm take0ver and breaking news updates). I think it’s really important for the Lounge to have a variety of voices leading the conversation. Hopefully, we’ll have still more next year. The more this becomes a collective thing, the better and more useful it will become for all of us (in my humble).

To that end, as much as I appreciate the (lurking and active) readership and the (frequent and infrequent) commentators, I really, really hope that all of you reading this will think about the possibility of becoming a contributor. Options include taking over some regular feature (either totally or alternating), taking over some occasional feature (like the Board Report Review) that occurs monthly or intermittently, coming up with your own feature (set your own schedule!), or just becoming a contributor so you can post if and when you feel like it. If you’re interested, drop me a line and we can talk through how we’ll get you started.

I am planning to have a meeting in August some time to talk about the Lounge, new possibilities, and what I’ve learned from it (maybe at one of the Faculty Development shin-digs), and I hope you’ll come there with ideas and possibilities (or post them here).

More than anything, though, I wish you a healthy and happy summer. You’ve earned it.

PS: If you missed them in the comments, consider checking out Art DiVito’s TEDX talk on Education (and try, if you can, to answer a sixth question that he poses indirectly through his talk–how can one man be wrong about so much?) and this article from Hector.

h/t to both of them for the pointers.

Unsolicited Advice

Posted by PhiloDave on May 17, 2011

As you know, if you’ve been paying any attention, there will be a number of MAJOR events taking place in the lives of your fellow faculty members. Some are moving, some are retiring, some are getting married, some are having kids, and, undoubtedly, some are doing many important things not on that list.

So, I thought I’d post an open thread of sorts so that you people can provide those people with the wisdom of your experience (and/or snappy bits of wisdom that you’ve picked up from others along the way.

I have found that, “Don’t take any wooden nickels” works well in both literal and figurative terms for pretty much anybody about to do pretty much anything.

But if you’d like to offer anything more specific (e.g., “Parent the kid who comes out” for soon to be parents, or “Always date your spouse” for soon to be marrieds, or “Lord loves a working man” for the soon to be retired), this is just the place to do it.

Tuesday (Non)Teaching Question

Posted by mathissexy on May 17, 2011

Tuesday (Non)Teaching Question is an irregular feature that attempts to get a conversation going about (non)teaching.  Typically, the questions attempt to be very impractical and begin with an excessively short preamble.  T(n)TQ is brought to you by CAST.  If you have a question that you’re dying to have featured in an upcoming T(n)TQ, don’t e-mail me at hwc_cast@ccc.edu since this is a one shot deal.

So we survived the semester and final grades are (almost) in…

Those of you teaching summer have a few weeks off; the rest of us have a significantly longer amount of time.

What are you planning to read/watch/see during your time off?

It would be kind of fun if we had a faculty book club of sort (similar to the once existent Pedagogy reading group).  Maybe from these responses we could find a book we could all read and discuss in the fall.
