Tuesday Teaching Question

I figured we could use today TTQ to pick up on the questions from the Reinvention focus group from last week (this past weekend’s TKP).

  1. Why are you at City Colleges?
  2. What can we do to help our students achieve better?
  3. What practices have the most effective impact on students?
  4. How do you share information and ideas with your colleagues and access professional development info?
  5. What key issues have not been discussed in the Reinvention process?

  1. 1. I enjoy teaching and working in this diverse community. We’ve got our own UN right here.
    2. Empower them with critical thinking skills. Then teach.
    3. Getting to know them, accepting them for who they are, and making lemonade out of the lemons they’ve been given by the schooling system/culture.
    4. I find that sitting around casually before/after meetings and sharing words in the hallway is more productive for sharing info/ideas than requiring folks to sit down formally to achieve the same results. I give you DWFDW as an example.
    5. That list is too long, and it keeps growing with every reinvention of the reinvention plan. However, I am ready, willing, and able to work with the hand that has been dealt to faculty. I’m reminded of former President DeSombre’s words during the renovation of our college: No whining folks, we’re [reinventing] so make the best of it.

    Thanks for the post.
