Welcome to Week 15, people. It seems like August was ages ago and that it’s gone by in a blink.
Ongoing: Open Enrollment is going on right now. Get your forms and sign up for what you want/need to sign up.
Monday, 11/29: If no one else has done it already, hang a petition in your department that reads: Dear Registrar Wiley: We the faculty request that we be provided a minimum of 48 hours from the end of classes to evaluate and calculate student grades. In light of the efficiencies that are to be realized from the electronic submission of grades (hooray!), please consider changing the submission date for final grades from Saturday, December 11th to at least Monday, December 13th, if not later (if possible). Thank you in advance for your assistance.” Then sign it. If someone else has done it, then sign the one that’s posted.
Hybrid/Blended Committee meeting at 3:30 in room 608.
Wednesday, 12/1: December arrives.
Anything else happening this week?
I love the petition idea.
I agree. This fast turnaround is particularly difficult for folks who teach Saturday classes.
We need a reasonable amount of time to grade the final projects/papers/presentations that take place during the 16th week of class and then we need time to tally the final grade. The quality of the grading process and perhaps even the learning process can be impacted by this rush to get grades in.
I understand that grades need to be submitted in a timely manner, but turning them in on the Monday after the semester is over seems to be reasonable. Turning them in on the Saturday of the final day of class is almost impossible for those of us teaching Saturday classes. It either forces folks to plan a “lame duck” final session and tally grades during week 15, or it forces folks to turn grades in late and risk being on the naughty list.
When did faculty receive the official word that grades are due on the 11th?
Chris Sabino reported that date as being provided to FC4 (Executive Council, I presume) from Administration as being the last date to submit grades electronically. Given that electronic submission is required, I made the leap to understand that the 11th would be the deadline.
I have not yet seen anything from our registrar with the due dates, but Saturday is typical for the the fall semester. In the Spring we usually get until Monday, but I’ve been late more than once in the fall because I could not turn my grades in on Friday or Saturday.
Yes. It was part of the list sent to FC4 but as we can see, it has yet to be officially communicated to us at HWC so we’ll see.
Seems like the petition can’t hurt, then…even if it is moot. Better safe than sorry?
Cheryl,
Several faculty are concerned/wondering about the Final grade deadline. There’s been a lot of buzz about this on haroldlounge.com. I’m guessing that there is a handout coming soon from you about this deadline, but district sent out an e-mail to District wide Faculty Council which stated that final grades are due Saturday Dec. 11.
Is this the deadline or will we have until Monday Dec. 13 like usual?
If it is for Saturday, I’d implore you to reconsider this deadline. This would require in impossibly quick turnaround for faculty teaching Saturday class and a very difficult turnaround for faculty teaching Thursday or Friday classes.
Thanks so much for clearing this up.
