Faculty Council Corner is a regular Thursday morning feature, presenting an open thread for you to bother your HWFC members with pressing questions (or for us to post the pressing questions that you have). Also, you can expect this to be the forum where we post regular updates about what is happening with Faculty Council and when.
Welcome back to the FC Corner.
Last Week’s Pressing Questions:
~From the Realist: “Where are we with the shared governance thingy?”
According to an informational email from our local HWFC President, Rosie Banks, at the FC4 retreat, a number of district wide committees were reactivated, including one called Committee T. She wrote, “Committee T deals with shared governance issues and is currently charged with revising in collaboration with District Academic Affairs the resolution on shared governance that faculty drafted in Spring 2011. In the retreat discussion, the Provost agreed to work with this committee (to be composed of seven faculty members district-wide) to revise and address the resolution.” What resolution, you might ask? This one.
And so who will be on this Committee T? Last I heard it will be Nicole Smith (Business) representing HW on the committee. I’m not sure who else will be involved. There was one other person who expressed interest in being on the committee, but Nicole was first to volunteer.
~From FC Member, Matt U.: “What used to be known as the “Activity Period” (Thur 2:00-3:50) doesn’t really seem to exist anymore. We now have a lot of classes that meet during this time. In my department at least, this seems to contribute to our sparsely attended department meetings, as well as to the lack of active departmental curriculum committees. Without a common time when classes aren’t in session, scheduling regular meetings is tough, if not impossible. I don’t have a great solution to offer, but I’m wondering if anyone else has noticed this trend and felt its impact. Thoughts?”
The discussion, while relatively small, by which I mean involving a handful of people, seemed to suggest agreement regarding the shared experience of difficulty to find clear, available meeting time without an unscheduled slot in the weekly calendar, and more than a little enthusiasm for the idea of a “sacred,” unscheduled schedule slot.
This Week’s Updates:
~Next Tuesday (9/13) is the first HWFC meeting of the year, which will open with a bunch of business
officer elections and (sorry, my mistake; that happens in November). We’ll meet in room 1046 at 3:30 and try to get done within an hour. If we don’t, Ferri will bust out his comb on all of us. No one wants that to happen.
~Later today (9/8) HWFC will be meeting with President Laackman and his team, at his/their behest, to talk about Performance Based Funding (i.e., the likely, like it or not, future formula for higher ed funding). I will have more info on that meeting when I can share it.
~On Friday (9/9) HWFC members will attend the Chair’s Council meeting, which will include a conversation with representatives from Beck’s. So if you have some complaints about the book stores (or better–fact based, specific stories about their practices (this semester or recent semesters) send those in to your chair or favorite HWFC member or favorite administrator in the office of instruction so they can inform Beck’s.
Please post any additional updates and questions in the comments. And come to the HWFC meeting next Tuesday!
