Love that kick drum. And the gorgeous harmonies. And the chorus. My goodness. Breathtaking. It doesn’t hurt that the lyrics make a near perfect match for a philosopher’s theme song. If my life were a tv show, I’d want this as the song for the show:

And they play the Metro on October 4th.

What a stunner of a year it’s been in the North Africa and the Middle East. A musical tribute on a blog from a community college in Chicago seems to me to be  a pretty pathetic gesture of admiration, but I can’t not do it. I stumbled on this one (HERE), accidentally, while checking out a pretty interesting philosophy, art, and politics blog (the place with the Chuck Norris philosophy jokes, co-founded by a former teacher of our very own John Hader, it turns out).

I couldn’t get it out of my head for a couple of days. Sometimes earnest pleas are the hardest rocking things there are. And the piano is haunting…

Once more, and this time with feeling…welcome to the first day of classes of fall 2011:

“…Gotta find a way, a better way, better way…”

Finals week always makes me “Jumpi”!

Driving through Milwaukee yesterday, my thoughts fell upon what I always think about going through that town–Bratwurst, Laverne DeFazio, Beer, the BoDeans, Milwaukee County Stadium, Summerfest, and the best thing to come out of Milwaukee: The Violent Femmes. It’s not my absolute favorite Femmes song (nor favorite version of this song), but I think of this song often while grading…”This will go down on your permanent record!” It’s surprisingly good to thrash around to as well, should you be in the mood for a little thrashing this morning.

Earth day has come and gone, National Poetry month is coming to a close, along with Pacific Islander-Asian American Heritage Month, and it’s the Monday after a brief respite, which usually leads me to expect a general grogginess borne of either too little work or too much fun.

And so, I open this week with a mellow (at least initially), but cool, sound of warm beaches and sunshine. If you didn’t get any of either over the break, maybe this will do (for now)…

April is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, so I thought I might highlight a little music of the Pacific. My own bias is decided East Coast, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t great stuff out west of here (which is really just far east, baby). Check this Japanese noise right here:

Dark Side of the Moon Oddity

From Mike Davis:

I somehow think that this would have a very happy home on the Harold Lounge.

Its an 8-bit nintendo card interpretation of Pink Floyd’s Darkside of the Moon.  This will turn 38 this month.  All I have to say is…cool.

I started to get nauseous about 14 seconds in, which is ok and has its own sorts of pleasures–I might have tried to ride it through to the end, but I had to drive the critters to their swimming lessons so I couldn’t. Let me know how it ends!

I thought about going with this one for a generational and thematic nod, but it nearly put me to sleep, which wouldn’t do (see above). Thought about this one, with a wink, but the advice doesn’t seem quite right for the moment. I almost posted this one, but I just couldn’t do it during Women’s History Month, given the man’s history with women.

So, I settled on this, because it made me chuckle to imagine our new President getting ready for his first day on the job, tying up his necktie in a fine double Windsor and belting this out along with Koko.

Who doesn’t need a little confidence booster on Monday morning? I know I do…
