State of the College

Did anyone else notice that the State of the College is the Friday before our three day weekend celebrating President’s Day?

And did you notice the timing? 11:30am. Since food for faculty and staff is not considered a good use of district money, does this mean we should eat before or hope the meeting ends before we get hungry?Β  I am looking forward to meeting the new faculty and hearing about how our enrollment is up, I’m just wondering if I should pack a lunch!

TO: All Full-time Harold Washington College Employees
RE: Spring 2012 State of the College Address
The Spring 2012 HWC State of the College Address will be held on Friday, February 17, 2012 at 11:30 am in Washington Hall (room 103). This is a mandatory meeting for all HWC full-time Faculty, Staff, and Administrators.
Among personnel exempted from this requirement are Faculty with instructional commitments, the switchboard operator and front desk security. All other HWC employees are required to attend the State of the College Address and should make arrangements for closing their offices or departments. We look forward to seeing you there.

  1. Yes. I’m disappointed that I’ll have to miss it due to the timing. I’ve had a trip planned for that weekend for several months.

  2. I noticed the timing and I am a bit concerned about lunch. πŸ™‚ lol

I believe Ms. Manners would say that the invitation should specify whether food shall or shall not be served. My personal belief, and perhaps I am very naive, is that dining together creates bonds between people in a community. Since it is so very rare that all departments come together in this way, it would be a lost opportunity if we do not have the chance to share food and communicate about our policies and procedures in a more informal setting. I believe, in essence, that an opportunity to dine together might foster greater communication between departments.

Let us celebrate what we have accomplished by breaking bread! and we have so many accomplishments to celebrate this semester!

Hmmmmnnnnnn…….Perhaps a light luncheon with small plate items such as finger sandwiches, no sit down, might encourage mingling and communication among more people. Then again, I have strong feelings about upholding the cultural tradition of providing lunch when a party is scheduled between 11:00am and 1:00pm. (However, perhaps I am just unbelievably old fashioned πŸ˜‰

Still, in truth, I always look forward to State of the College regardless of whether lunch shall or shall not be served.
